John Washington III, a 2028 presidential candidate, is arguing that the courts cannot stay independent if another branch holds their money. “When Congress controls the courts’ funding, the justice system can suffer,” he wrote. He pointed to 2025, when, he wrote, “the federal courts had to scale back paid operations because of a funding lapse.”

John Washington III framed the issue as a crack in the system of checks and balances. “That’s not balance. That’s dependence,” he wrote. “If one branch can squeeze another financially, then checks and balances start to crack.” He asked readers to picture themselves in court without a $10,000 lawyer, saying judges must be free to protect constitutional rights rather than worry about politics or budgets.

John Washington III closed with a specific proposal. “I’m calling for guaranteed, independent funding for all three branches, with full public accountability, but no political retaliation,” he wrote. “This isn’t unlimited money. It’s about protecting the people’s rights and restoring real independence among the branches.”
