Bears Trade Deadline: Chicago Is Still Calling Around for an Edge Rusher After the Jeffery Simmons Blockbuster

Monday night in Seattle comes first — but a Sunday report says general manager Ryan Poles is still working the phones for pass-rush help before the November 10 deadline.

Bears Trade Deadline: Chicago Is Still Calling Around for an Edge Rusher After the Jeffery Simmons Blockbuster (Chicago Windy City News)

The Chicago Bears may not be finished dealing. After landing All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from Tennessee in the week's blockbuster trade, Chicago continues to call around for edge-rusher help before the November 10 trade deadline, according to a Sunday report carried by Yardbarker that cited Ian Rapoport's reporting on NFL GameDay Morning. The search, the report said, is for an upgrade opposite or alongside Montez Sweat.

The Simmons deal already reshaped the Bears' future draft capital: general manager Ryan Poles sent the Titans their 2027 and 2028 first-round picks plus a 2027 fourth-rounder in exchange for Simmons and a 2028 fifth-round pick, the report said. Simmons, 29, arrives under a contract that runs through 2030 after signing a three-year, $105.8 million extension last summer. Any further addition, the report noted, would have to clear both the salary cap and what is left of that draft capital.

The immediate business is Monday night. The Bears (5-2) visit the Seahawks (4-3) at Lumen Field seeking a third straight win, in a game the club's official preview frames around Simmons's debut, Sweat's return from a two-game suspension and linebacker T.J. Edwards's return from a hamstring injury. They will face a Seattle team that made its own deadline-week move, acquiring eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson from Indianapolis — and a quarterback, Sam Darnold, whose eight interceptions are tied for the most in the league.

Whether a second trade lands or not, the posture is the story in Chicago: a 5-2 team in a prime-time stretch is buying, not standing pat, and the deadline clock — nine days from Sunday — is now part of every Bears week until November 10.
