Election Day in Chicago: Polls Open 6 A.M. to 7 P.M. Tuesday, and You Can Vote at Your Precinct or Any Vote Center

Early voting ends Monday. On Tuesday, Chicago voters can cast a ballot at their precinct, at any of the 50 ward vote centers or at the downtown Supersite - and Illinois still lets an eligible voter register and vote in the same visit, right up through Election Day.

Chicago's early voting sites close for the last time on Monday, November 2, and on Tuesday the election moves to Election Day rules. Polls across the city are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, and any voter who is in line by 7 p.m. is entitled to vote.

On Election Day, a Chicago voter is not limited to a single assigned location. Voters may cast a ballot at their assigned precinct polling place, at any of the city's 50 ward vote centers, or at the Downtown Voting Supersite at 137 S. State St. One familiar early-voting stop is not an Election Day option: the Chicago Board of Elections office at 69 W. Washington St. does not offer voting on Election Day.

A missed registration deadline does not end the matter in Illinois. The state offers grace-period registration, which lets an eligible voter register and vote in a single visit up to and including Election Day, and same-day registration is available at precinct polling places and vote centers. A voter registering in person should bring two forms of identification or qualifying documents, with at least one showing the voter's current address.

Mail ballots follow their own clock. A ballot sent by mail must be postmarked on or before Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, and received by the election authority by November 17 to be counted. Secured drop boxes at early voting locations accept ballots until 7 p.m. on Election Day, though some close earlier - and precinct polling places do not have drop boxes on Election Day, according to the Board of Elections' voter mailer.

Cook County's Assault Weapons Ban Faces a Supreme Court Test on December 2

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments December 2 in Viramontes v. Cook County, a challenge to the county's ban on AR-15-style rifles first enacted in 1993 and later named for Blair Holt, a Chicago student killed on a city bus. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has joined 18 other attorneys general backing the county.
