Chicago Teams Roll in the IHSA First Round: Mount Carmel, Lane, Kenwood and St. Ignatius All Win Big
Mount Carmel beat Marist 55-21, Lane and St. Ignatius won by lopsided margins of their own, Kenwood, St. Patrick, St. Rita and Simeon all advanced - and Chicago's Goode played in the highest-scoring playoff game in IHSA history, an 88-84 loss to Quincy.

Chicago's high school football teams had a loud first round of the Illinois state playoffs on Friday and Saturday. In Class 8A, Mount Carmel beat Marist 55-21 in an all-Chicago matchup, Lane topped South Elgin 33-14, and St. Ignatius routed West Aurora 55-7. Loyola Academy shut out Minooka 41-0, and Lincoln-Way East beat River Forest 31-7.
Class 7A brought more of the same. Kenwood rolled past Glenbard East 46-9, St. Patrick beat Westinghouse 49-13 in another all-Chicago game, and St. Rita handled Buffalo Grove 36-10. Burbank's St. Laurence also advanced past Plainfield South, setting up a second-round visit from Lincoln-Way West.
In Class 6A, Simeon edged Oak Lawn Community 28-19. The round's wildest game involved a Chicago team on the losing end: Quincy beat Goode 88-84, a 172-point shootout that On3 reported as the highest-scoring game in IHSA playoff history. In Class 5A, Providence Catholic won 35-20 at Kankakee after opening the postseason with a 49-13 win over Mt. Vernon, and in Class 3A, C. Hope Academy beat McNamara 36-13.
The second round is set for next weekend. Providence Catholic's run continues against Chicago's Morgan Park, a meeting of two of the area's surviving programs, and Lincoln-Way West travels to St. Laurence, with the eight class championships scheduled for November 27-28 at Hancock Stadium in Normal.
